These look so pretty!

We found this photo on Color Me Pretty's blog and smiled. We have this little wire basket with the small glass vases in the store and we're delighted with how pretty they look!

Jello Molds!

I'm sure if you are a Downton Abbey fan, you have seen jello molds.

Jello molds have been used in kitchens long before Mrs. Patmore and Daisy were making meals. They come in both ceramic, glass, and copper and during the 1950's and 60's aluminum was all the rage. My grandmother made many a jello salad.

I don't use them for jello very often, but I love the way they look, especially the ceramic and glass variety. I re-purpose them as dip or sauce containers and use them with my crudites, fruit or cheese platters etc. Here I've used one for my favorite Meyers lemon yogurt sauce!

Re-Use, Re-Invent, Re-Purpose

One of the wonderful things about vintage pieces is that they can get your creative juices flowing. Not so much because vintage objects are usually made well, often have interesting parts to them, or are beautifully designed, but because so many of the original uses for the piece are no longer common. Just because it's not something I would use the way it was intended doesn't mean that it's not an awesome piece. This is when I begin to think up a new use.

Take for instance, these beautiful lamp globes. Originally, during all those years before electricity, people used oil lamps, candles or gas for light. During the Victorian era, when these were most likely made, these lamp covers would have been on a gorgeous lamp, probably very ornate and possibly gas. Somehow these lamp globes got separated from their base. Too bad for the lamp but the cherub faces and delicate design make them irresistible to me.

So, I washed them, took a candle that you can buy in a glass jar and placed the jar in the inside of the lamp cover.

The glow is beautiful, and these unique candle covers look wonderful anywhere in the house and can double as light for a breezy outside party. I doubt they would blow out!

Antique French Metal Bed. Oh how we wish we could find one adult size but until we put the finishing touches on our time machine we'll have to settle for using it as a too sweet love seat until some lucky little girl gets to act out her favorite Madeline books with it. Oh, to be young again!

Here is a fun piece from the past, that would look great in just about any room in the house!

A maple wood, Windsor style, telephone bench from the 1950-60's.
Back when there was only one phone in the house a telephone bench was the place to sit and have a conversation, take notes and be comfortable.
Place a vintage rotary phone on the small desk top and you have a great look!

In my opinion, the bench would look wonderful in an entry hallway, a kitchen or even the bedroom.

Hey, even the bathroom would work- a great place to sit and paint your toenails, right?

The 25 Days of Christmas Posts: Day Twenty Will Keep You Warm

If you're anything like my family the Christmas season means making hot chocolate and getting cozy in front of the TV watching your favorite Christmas classics. In my family everyone has their favorite so we end up watching them all: The Shop Around the Corner, Christmas in Connecticut, Holiday Inn, The Man Who Came to Dinner (the BEST!), White Christmas and more. More than presents, more than cookies, it's my favorite part of the holidays and it just can't be done without a nice thick wool blanket.

The 25 Days of Christmas Posts: Day Sixteen For Your Holiday Party

If you're sick of eggnog and not so sure about hot buttered rum but still looking for a holiday drink then we have just the thing for you!

A Tom & Jerry is a Christmas drink created in the 1850s at the Planters' House hotel in St. Louis. The creator was a man name Jerry Thomas, "The Father of American Mixology", named for his work spreading cocktail culture across the country. While similar to Eggnog, a Tom & Jerry uses milk instead of heavy cream and calls for Jamaican rum as well as Brandy. It was a very popular holiday drink until the 1960s but 50 years later we think it might be time to bring it back! Click here for a recipe from Serious Eats.
