Item Of The Week: Antique Wine Basket

Hey there cats and kittens!

I want to apologize for our lack of updates. When the writer and photographer are two different people it can be hard to find the time for our poor neglected blog. We've made a New Years Resolution to give this website more of our attention starting with our 12 Days of Christmas Posts in mid December and more after the holiday rush. Until then we give you our item of the week (err few weeks)!

Are you drooling yet? I know I am.

This piece is everything I look for in a vintage piece, history, fine craftsmanship and function. Can you ask for anything more? 

Clocking in at over 100 years old this wine basket was what was originally used to ship wine in France. The interior is original French Ticking something barely in production these days and worth a fortune. This is an incredibly sturdy basket that has been reinforced and shows no signs of unraveling. There is some wine splotches on the ticking and dark spots on the outside of the basket (which can be seen in the photos above) but we think that just adds to it's charm.

Now that we know it's history and have gazed upon it's beauty and craftsmanship we can focus on the most fun part: Function! Luckily, it's a basket, so really there are as many uses as you can think of things to put in it. It is great for towels or sheets and would look very smart at the end of any bed. In the bathroom, it is a great way to hide toilet paper rolls and other bathroom items while still making them easy to get to. "Look here now," you may be saying, "I have quite enough storage already. What use is this basket to me?" Well first off, there is NO SUCH THING as enough storage, but if some how that is the case just place a nice piece of glass over the basket and you've got quite a handsome coffee table. How easy was that!

Item Of The Week: Enjoying The Last Days of Summer With A Tortilla Box (& A Recipe!)

Now my boyfriend and I make quesadillas all year around as they are a great way to use up extra produce, meats and cheeses that are sailing toward their expiration date but when summer comes they stop being a quick snack and become the main course mostly thanks to the wonder that is sweet summer corn. Nothing says summer to us like crisp crunchy corn with melted queso, cojita and some spicy cilantro! Easy to whip up and served along with a bowl of pico de gallo they are great for surprise guests or lazy dinners spend in the garden. 

So when we got this hand painted, vibrant, fun, floral tortilla box we knew we just had to offer it up as our IOTW while summer was still in play! The tortilla box is a wonder of craftsmanship and I seriously can't think of a more beautiful way to display your tortillas at a party or just for your own use. If you're not as big a fan of mexican food as we are here at Hide & Seek it doubles nicely as a place to hide ugly remotes, keep papers or fill with whatever culinary item brings you joy!

Now since it would just be cruel not to tell you about our super (not so) secret fresh corn quesadilla you can find the recipe below!

Rosted Corn & Cojita Quesidillas

SERVES 2

• 2 ears fresh corn, or 2 cups frozen corn
• Butter for sauteing corn and frying tortillas 
• pinches cayenne pepper or chili powder
• splashes fresh lime juice
• sprigs cilantro, chopped
• 2 large tortillas
• 1/2 cup queso fresco cheese, grated
• 1/2 cup cojita cheese, grated

1. Cut the corn from the cob using a sharp knife. This will be messy, so be ready for corn to fly in every direction. Sauté the corn with some butter in a pan over medium high heat until it has roasted a bit. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder, splash of fresh lime juice, and some chopped cilantro. Stir and then pour into a bowl and set aside.
2. Melt some more butter in the same pan. Fill half of a tortilla with the grated cheeses and the corn and then fold it over. Fry in the pan until golden brown on both sides. Garnish with cilantro, salsa, and sour cream and enjoy!

I really like the idea of hanging jewelry on them like they did in the last photo. It opens up many possibilities of what else you could hang, off the top of my head I think it would be great with ties or dish towels in the kitchen!

Item of the Week: Vintage Wooden Budweiser Tray

Now I know last week I said there would be a big surprise and I'll get to that in a minute but first let's focus on our item of the week.

This week we are super excited about this Budweiser tray. We're not exactly sure when it was made but our limited research has brought us to the conclusion that it was probably made in the 1970s. The Budweiser tray features an itaglio Budweiser banner as well as the A&E Eagle Logo. "Budweiser" is also stamped into either side of the tray. It looks to be done by a die stamping process or something similar. The bottom has been stenciled with the Gideon-Anderson Corp name and city. It is very sturdy and has nice high sides so you can continue to use it for what it's meant for with little worry! Of course it would also look great on your wall or on your living room table holding all your remotes (and half finished crossword puzzles if you're anything like me).

Item Of The Week: Coming soon...

Bette Davis is very disappointed! 

We had a big special surprise we were hoping to unveil today in lieu of our item of the week but, damn that heat, we just couldn't seem to get it done in time. We promise next week we'll have an extra special item of the week to make it up. Until then, here are some teasing photos that mean nothing out of context but will make you say "Ohhhh!" next week!

Item Of The Week: The Sailboats

Are they practical? Well, no. Useful? Not quite but they are hand made, have exquisite detail and while they may not be home in your average Los Angeles apartment they sure are home in the Lord family of Philadelphia's pool house. 

The above clip is from the movie The Philadelphia Story, my favorite and the Oscar winning 1940 film starring Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn & Jimmy Stewart (What!? All three! I know!). While my love for this movie & New England WASP background just might have something to do my eyes always going to the Sailboats no matter where I am in the room, it is also their delicate balance of whimsy and masculinity, sturdiness and grace and impeccable detailing that keeps me coming back for a closer look. 

The larger one, or "The True Love" as I have affectionately named it, stands 33.5" tall from base of the stand to the Masthead and 26" from the Stern to the Bow. The rudder can me moved from side to side and when it does the "rope" moves through the hoist lanyard cleat like it would on an actual sailboat. In fact the model works so much like a sailboat you might get a passable grade on a boating test just by playing with it. It is on sale for $120.*

The smaller one, or "My She's Yar", stands 13" tall from base to Masthead and is one foot across. It comes with a removable rudder and while it may not be as accurate as "The True Love" is had great accessories such as two oars, a life raft and fish nets. It is being sold for $40.**

 I may have been born and raised in Los Angeles but whenever I see these two boats I dream of moving east where the houses are sturdy, history is everywhere, the people look like 40s movie stars with the cutting wit to match, and there are always perfectly made martini's being served on the patio (don't tell me if those last few aren't true!). So while they may not be useful, these boats represent the "Yar" ideal explained by Ms. Hepburn as, "easy to handle, quick to the helm, fast, bright", all without pretensions and instead with a healthy dose of whimsy. Whether you live by the ocean, have an aspiring sailor in the house or are just feeling nostalgic for back east these two boats will make a nice addition to any vintage collection.
